Nota de Prensa: Akira Cómics amplia sus instalaciones poniendo el foco en la sección manga

CONTEXTO HISTÓRICO

Desde su fundación en 1993, una de las señas de identidad de la librería es la planificación meticulosa y paciente de la evolución y acciones a acometer en plazos de tiempo de 5 a 10 años vista. Con esa forma de trabajar a largo plazo, muy inspirada en las culturas orientales de las que Akira Cómics toma incluso su nombre, detectamos a comienzos de la presente década como el manga, el cómic japonés, había eclosionado como el tipo de noveno arte predominante en occidente (Estados Unidos, Europa Occidental y por supuesto en España) para las generaciones más jóvenes (generaciones Zeta y Alfa, grosso modo menores de 25 años de ambos sexos). El manga llegó a España a finales de la década de los 80 con la película Akira y la serie de anime Dragon Ball y fue uno de los motores fundacionales de nuestra librería de forma que siempre a lo largo de nuestros 32 años de existencia ha constituido una de las partes fundamentales de Akira Cómics, creciendo poco a poco a la par que su implantación en la sociedad occidental.

Una vez que en la década del 2020 el manga, tal y como indicábamos antes, eclosiona y se sitúa como medio de cómic hegemónico para todos los menores de 25 años emprendemos la planificación de nuestro siguiente movimiento, el que presentamos en esta nota de prensa, y que pretende ser lo que vertebre nuestra realidad librera en los próximos lustros conforme esa presencia hegemónica del manga siga creciendo junto a los lectores actuales.

MUCHO MÁS MANGA PARA SENTAR EL FUTURO DE LA LIBRERÍA

Esta vez presentamos la nueva ampliación de Akira Cómics (la primera fue en 2018 y la segunda y última hasta la fecha en 2022) que va a centrarse especialmente en la sección manga de la librería, lo que nosotros denominamos el “distrito Neo-Tokyo”.

Su superficie va a ser incrementada de forma espectacular (hasta los 400 m2 aproximadamente) y va a sufrir un rediseño de sus instalaciones acorde a lo ya realizado en los distritos “Notre Dame” (la catedral del cómic) y “Baker Street” (la sección literaria de Akira Cómics). Queremos que el nuevo distrito “Neo Tokyo” no solo sea un lugar de reunión y disfrute de la cultura del manga sino que constituya una experiencia sensorial e inmersiva acorde a las mencionadas otras zonas de nuestra librería para que incluso visitantes no conocedores del fenómeno manga o lectores de otras disciplinas puedan conocerlo y disfrutarlo como se merece.

Y NO SOLO MANGA

El incremento de la librería en metros cuadrados va a ser tan grande que aprovecharemos para incrementar y mejorar nuestro flujo de trabajo online y las instalaciones dedicadas a la gestión y venta por internet. Igualmente vamos a ampliar y mejorar el ya existente “Laboratorio Stark”, que es el espacio creativo de I+D+i de la librería donde planificamos todas las mejoras o cambios a acometer en los siguientes lustros, un espacio concebido a partir de la inspiración de lugares similares como el creado en su momento por el chef Ferrán Adriá, quien nos sirve de inspiración constante para hacer de nuestro trabajo de libreros un espacio de creación e innovación constante.

UNAS CUANTAS CIFRAS

La librería pasará de tener 1080 a más de 1500 metros cuadrados repartidos en dos plantas de más de 750 metros cuadrados por planta, lo que nos convertirá en el espacio de cómics y fantasía más grande y espectacular de toda Europa.

En 2018 pasamos de tener 360 metros cuadrados a casi 720 y en ese momento se amplió la sección de cómic americano (distrito “Metrópolis”) así como el Museo de Originales del Cómic.

En 2022 pasamos de casi 720 a 1080 metros cuadrados inaugurando la catedral del Cómic (el espacio para cómic español y europeo que llamamos “Notre Dame”) y abriendo la parte literaria “Baker Street” dedicada a la literatura infantil y juvenil y del género fantástico.

Ahora en 2026 creceremos más allá de los 1500 metros cuadrados de superficie incorporando el nuevo distrito “Neo Tokyo” para mayor disfrute de los cada vez más numerosos lectores de manga.

La obra de ampliación ya está en marcha y se estima que podremos inaugurarla antes de terminar el presente 2026.

Akira Cómics would like to make public its next step in continuing to adapt to the future within the comic-book landscape in which it operates. To explain this, we will first provide some context:

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Since its founding in 1993, one of the defining characteristics of the store has been the meticulous and patient planning of its evolution and actions over timeframes of five to ten years. With this long-term approach (strongly inspired by Eastern cultures, from which Akira Cómics even takes its name) we identified at the beginning of the current decade that manga (Japanese comics) had emerged as the predominant form of the ninth art in the Western World (the United States, Western Europe, and of course Spain) among younger generations (both Z Generation and Alpha Generation, broadly speaking, those under 25 years of age of both sexes).

Manga arrived in Spain in the late 1980s with the film Akira and the anime series Dragon Ball, and it was one of the founding driving forces behind our bookstore. As such, throughout our 32 years of existence it has always been a fundamental part of Akira Cómics, gradually growing in parallel with its adoption in our Western society.

In the 2020s, when manga fully emerged and established itself as the hegemonic comic medium for everyone under the age of 25, we began planning our next move. This is the move we are presenting in this press release, and it is intended to shape the reality of our comicbookstore for the coming decades, as the hegemonic presence of manga continues to grow alongside current readers.

MUCH MORE MANGA TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF THE STORE

We now present the new expansion of Akira Cómics (the first took place in 2018, and the second and most recent one to date in 2022), which will focus especially on the manga section of the bookstore, what we refer to as the “Neo-Tokyo District.”

Its surface area will be expanded dramatically (to approximately 400 square meters) and will undergo a complete redesign of its facilities, in line with what has already been done in the “Notre Dame” district (the Cathedral of Comics) and “Baker Street” district (Akira Cómics’ literary section). Our goal is for the new “Neo-Tokyo” district not only to serve as a meeting place and a space for enjoying manga culture, but also to constitute a sensory and immersive experience comparable to those other areas of our bookstore, so that even visitors unfamiliar with the manga phenomenon, or readers from other disciplines, can discover and enjoy it as it deserves.

AND NOT JUST MANGA

The increase in the comicbookstore’s total square meters will be so significant that we will take advantage of it to expand and improve our online workflow, as well as the facilities dedicated to online management and sales. Likewise, we will expand and enhance the existing “Laboratorio Stark” (“Stark Lab”) which is the bookstore’s creative R&D&I space where we plan all improvements and changes to be undertaken in the coming decades. This space was conceived with inspiration from similar initiatives, such as the one created in its time by spanish chef Ferran Adrià, who serves as a constant source of inspiration for turning our work as retailers into a space of continuous creation and innovation.

SOME FIGURES

The store will grow from 1,080 to more than 1,500 square meters, distributed across two floors of over 750 square meters each, making it the largest and most spectacular comics and fantasy space in all of Europe.

In 2018, we expanded from 360 to nearly 720 square meters, at which time the American comics section (“Metropolis District”) was enlarged, along with the Museum of Original Comic Art.

In 2022, we grew from nearly 720 to 1,080 square meters, inaugurating the Cathedral of Comics (the space dedicated to Spanish and European comics, which we call “Notre Dame”) and opening the literary section “Baker Street,” dedicated to children’s and young adult literature and the fantasy genre.

Now, in 2026, we will expand beyond 1,500 square meters of total surface area with the incorporation of the new “Neo-Tokyo” district, for the greater enjoyment of the ever-growing community of manga readers.

Construction work on the expansion is already underway, and it is estimated that we will be able to inaugurate it before the end of 2026.
